VACCINATIONS

There are several serious infections that can threaten your cat.

Feline Panleucopaenia (Feline Infectious Enteritis) is caused by a parvovirus, affecting the production of white blood cells.

Feline Viral Respiratory disease (cat flu) is a major clinical problem and is caused by a herpes virus (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis) and strains of Feline Calicivirus.  Both these respiratory infections may require long term treatment.

One of the most life threatening infections is Feline Leukaemia, it is an infectious disease, caused by a virus, which can damage the immune system.

These vaccines comprise of: R - Feline Rhinotracheitis

                                                 C - Feline Calicivirus

                                                 P - Feline Panleucopaenia.

The above are the standard vaccinations given, the FeLV vaccine (leukaemia) is an "optional" vaccine, in most cases we would recommend a simple blood test to be sure your cat is FeLV negative before giving this vaccine.

During the first few weeks after birth, a kitten is protected by antibodies from the mother's milk.  As this protection declines, vaccination is essential to maintain immunity against disease.  It should be started in kittenhood and maintained with yearly boosters.

Kittens should be vaccinated at 8 weeks of age, with a second vaccination 3-4 weeks later.

FLEA TREATMENT

Frontline COMBO is effective against fleas, ticks and/or biting lice.

The main difference between frontline COMBO and just normal "frontline spot on" is that the combo helps to prevent contamination of the environment of treated animals with immature stages of fleas.

Frontline COMBO (spot on) should be used at a minimum treatment interval of 4 weeks.

Frontline SPRAY is also used against fleas, ticks and/or biting lice, it also helps to control Cheyletiella, Sarcoptes and Neotrombicula.

Frontline SPRAY should be reapplied every 12 weeks for fleas and every 4 weeks for ticks, the minimum treatment interval being 4 weeks.
